Hearing Loss at All Ages
Hearing loss is an ear condition that occurs at all ages, in older people due to old age, but also in young adults, young children and even infants. It can be mild, moderate, severe or can reach complete deafness.
Especially when detected in infants, it requires immediate treatment, as it can affect the child’s speech and normal learning development. If hearing restoration with a cochlear implant, which replaces the function of the sensorineural organ, is preferred, it is usually combined with speech therapy.
When found in children, the hearing loss may be due to inflammation of the ear, an injury, infections, ototoxic drugs or even be hereditary.
When found in adults, it can be caused by otosclerosis, middle ear conditions (otitis media, fluid in the ear), diseases of the external auditory canal or diseases of the inner ear.
This is how the most appropriate method of hearing restoration is selected. In some cases it is effective and the use of hearing aids is sufficient for the complete restoration of the patient’s hearing. In others, the patient will have to undergo surgery (cochlear implant).
It is important for all of us to have frequent ENT examinations to detect any hearing impairment or a complication from a recent infection in time. Children should be checked just as often, as they are even more susceptible to ear infections and ear infections that may be caused by a minor injury. Also, if not detected in time a hearing disorder can lead to delayed speech and later to learning and social difficulties. The earlier the problem is detected, the greater the chances of it being corrected.
The diagnostic methods used to detect hearing disorders are audiometry, speech audiometry, auditory evoked potentials and otoacoustic emissions. A very important part of the examination is the recording of the individual and family history, as it may have a hereditary basis.
