Hearing loss: How to Protect Yourself
The World Health Organization estimates that 50% of people aged 12-35 years are at risk of losing their hearing and warns to take steps to protect their hearing immediately.
Given that the whole planet has become noisier in recent years, both due to traffic congestion and the constant use of mobile phones, the problem of hearing loss is growing.
Measures to take in order to avoid problems:
- In order to block out noises from the environment, several times you turn up the volume on your mobile phone headphones too loudly, which puts you at serious risk, as you disturb and ultimately destroy the nerve endings in your ears that are particularly sensitive to loud sounds. In addition, long-term exposure to loud music can gradually weaken your hearing. Turn down the volume on your headphones – mobile phones usually have a safe volume indicator – or get headphones that isolate from surrounding noise (noise cancelling) and eventually allow you to listen to music at a lower volume.
- Use earplugs. If you are often in places with loud music, if your work is in a noisy environment, if you often drive on noisy roads or ride a motorbike, it is necessary to wear earplugs to protect your hearing. There are many types on the market that cover all needs.
- Take a break. If you are in an environment with loud noises, get away for a while every now and then to a quiet place to give your ears a rest. This is not a solution in itself, of course, but it does help in a complementary way.
- Watch your diet. Add vitamin-rich fruits and vegetables to your diet. A balanced diet helps prevent diseases that can affect hearing. Consult a nutritionist to help you follow a proper diet.
